Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On June 14, 2012, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada considered taking action in relation to subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

The Project is the excavation of organic material, silt, sediment, sand and or gravel and the selective alteration and or removal of riparian and instream vegetation from twenty four locations in watercourses that are fish habitat within the municipal boundaries of the City of Chilliwack in British Columbia.

The scope of the Project is the works, undertakings and activities associated with the operation of the Project and the consideration of any changes and the effects of those changes that the project may have on the environment. The spatial boundaries of the assessment are primarily limited to the Project footprint; however, consideration is given to areas directly adjacent to the Project that could potentially be affected.

Final Decision

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
