Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On March 6, 2012, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because the Parks Canada Agency was the proponent for the project and considered providing federal lands.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

The Baldy Lake Prescribed Fire Unit is a 3,000 ha area located in the south western portion of the park. Two core grassland areas of ~300 ha will be maintained by fire and expanded upon. Application of two burns over five years should be able to restore an additional 600 ha of grasslands that have been encroached upon by aspen and boreal mixedwood. The burn units can be burned in the spring or fall, and are technically relatively easy to implement.

Final Decision

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
