Reasons for a Federal Assessment
On January 25, 2012, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada considered taking action in relation to subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act.
Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)
A mass slope failure along the Belly River adjecent to Highway 800 on the Peigan Reserve. Alberta Transportation is proposing bank stabilization techniques in order to protect the existing infrastructure and stop the erosion and sedimentation into the river.
The scope of the project includes all activities associated with the installation of erosion protection works along the bank of the Belly River. This also includes associated approaches and related works, accesses, storage areas or other undertakings directly associated with the project construction and compensation work.
Final Decision
On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
