Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On February 13, 2009, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Environment Canada considered taking action in relation to subsection 4(1) of the Migratory Birds Regulations.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

Project entails collecting feathers from up to 8,750 birds that are captured for banding purposes across 5 years. As many as 500 of these birds may be marked with a dab of ink and observed at hummingbird feeders. Birds will be captured and released following approximately 5 minutes of handling. Birds will be banded, some will be marked with a dab of ink, 2 tail feathers will be extracted. Following release, some birds will be subject to behavioural observations.

Final Decision

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
