Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On February 5, 2009, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because the Parks Canada Agency was the proponent for the project.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

Parks Canada (PC) intends to upgrade the septic system at the Banff East Gate, the main entrance into the Park. The upgraded system will consist of two separate septic tanks and fields and will conform to Alberta Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice. The tanks will be made of pre-cast concrete and installed in the same location as the old ones. The new septic fields will be installed in new locations. One tank and field will service buildings 1 and 2 and the other will service building 3 and the staff house. The old septic field will be decommissioned in place. Work is to be done in 2009.

Final Decision

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
