Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On October 27, 2008, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Department of National Defence was the proponent for the project.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

This project involves the construction/installation of a new storage compound for 5 Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (5CRPG), consisting of a new 1260 square metre fenced parking compound and the construction/installation of a 150 square metre. x 7.6 M high fabric storage shelter. The parking compound will be a gravel surface, finished to Class 'A' standard graveled surfaces/roadways. The finished compound will be enclosed with 3 M. high perimeter chain-link fencing c/w two (2) 3.6 M. wide access gates. The new fabric storage structure construction will consist of a perimeter concrete footing/foundation and concrete floor slab assembly, and a light-weight pre-fabricated steel/aluminum building frame c/w tensioned fabric covering over all wall/roof surfaces. The completed fenced storage compound will be used to secure 5CRPG owned vehicles and recreation vehicles, while the fabric storage shelter will be used for cold storage and storage of smaller recreation vehicles/equipment.

Final Decision

A decision was taken on November 17, 2008 and was that the authority may exercise any power or perform any duty or function with respect to the project because, after taking into consideration the screening report and taking into account the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, the authority is of the opinion that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
