Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On June 15, 2006, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada considered taking action in relation to subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

The various floods since 1995 have caused the banks of the Oldman River to erode drastically. At this location, a septic field is now 20 metres awayfrom the river and in danger of being exposed if another high water event occurs. In order to protect the septic field and the banks from any further erosion, two groynes will be placed in the river duirng a non-sensitive time period to deflect the force of the water. The scope of the project includes all physical activities associated with the construction and placement of two groynes in the Oldman River. This also includes associated approaches and related works, accesses, storage areas or other undertakings directly associated with the project construction and compensation works.

Final Decision

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
