Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On May 31, 2005, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada was the proponent for the project and Transport Canada considered taking action in relation to paragraph 5(1)(a) of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

Replace existing fuel storage and distribution system & electrical distribution system - plus standby power Construct new Ridgid Hull Inflatable Operator Training School building & onsite residences. Expand and renovate existing OPS/Boathouse Building to Coast Gaurd SAR standards. Renovate existing marine float & install new marine float. Install new mechanical sewage treatment plant to serve site. Upgrade site fire protection services. Scope will include most of the existing upland site of the Bamfield Coast Guard station plus waterlot.

Final Decision

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force which replaced the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, there is no longer a requirement to complete the environmental assessment of this project.
