La Ronge Indian Band (IR156) - Sewage Pump Station No. 2 Upgrades - Public Comments invited
September 10, 2026 - Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed Sewage Pump Station No. 2 Upgrades, to be located on Lac La Ronge Indian Band (IR156), is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.

Proposed Project
The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) is proposing to complete an upgrade to the sewage pump station No. 2 (SPS No. 2). The SPS is located on Queen Street, near Mikisew Road in the LLRIB Far Reserve (IR 156) and has a catchment area that includes Far Reserve, Fair Child IR 156, Kitsakie Reserve (IR 156B) and the Northern Village of Air Ronge. Upgrades to the SPS No. 2 are needed due to deficiencies in the level of service, undersized pumps, and because the building, mechanical and electrical components do not meet current standards and codes.
The area of the proposed new SPS No. 2, including the fenced land, is about 0.02 hectares in size, situated east of the existing SPS No. 2 which is about the same size. The project identified that the construction of a new wet well, new dry well and building is recommended to address the deficiencies to accommodate future wastewater loading.
Approximately 1,050 m of existing 200 mm sanitary sewer gravity main along Mikisew Road and Far Reserve Road will be upsized to 375 mm diameter pipes to manage peak wet weather flows and service the catchment area. Construction will take place from near the Jonas Roberts Community Center to SPS No. 2.
The proposed work includes twinning the existing 250 m diameter sewage force main to reduce operating pressure to approximately 67 psi, reduce total dynamic head to 44m, reduces pump size to 45 hp, reduces capital and lifecycle costs, extends the life of the existing force main. The new force main pipeline installation avoids following the existing path through the Bird Place cul-de-sac in favour of following along Queen Street eastwards from SPS No. 2 to Adam Ratt Street, then south to the lagoon where both the force mains will be installed in a common trench.
The preliminary design for the new SPS No. 2 includes process, electrical, instrumentation and control, mechanical, structural and architectural components. The new pumping station capacity will be upgraded from 45.5 L/s to 86.8 L/s and have a 20-year lifespan. The design also includes site clearing, grading, fencing, propane tank removal and reinstallation on concrete pad, upgrade SPS No. 2 access road and landscaping. Project works will occur within previously disturbed areas and areas pre-cleared of vegetation outside of the breeding bird season.
