Traffic Congestion
While I agree that another bridge is needed, the corridor 5 option will displace the downtown Ottawa traffic congestion to mostly residential areas. Adding new road capacity often attracts additional vehicle traffic, creating greater demand and shifting congestion to nearby intersections and connecting roads rather than eliminating it. Residents on both sides of the river will experience increased traffic volumes, longer delays at key junctions, and greater pressure on local streets that were never designed to accommodate high volumes of through traffic.
Furthermore, existing traffic management issues in the Montee Paiement area have not been adequately addressed. Current traffic light timing and signal coordination along with placement already contribute to delays, queueing, and driver frustration. Poor accessibility design at several intersections (including Davidson and Nobert) and access points to and off Highway 50 create gridlocks, inefficient traffic flow, and challenges for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. Multiple 18 wheelers that average 70 feet in length on this segment of road simply won't fit within the configuration. A new bridge corridor in this location will compound existing congestion problems and reduce the overall effectiveness of the transportation network.
Impact on residential neighborhoods
The proposed route will cause substantial disruption to established residential neighborhoods. Increased traffic levels on a 24 hours basis will bring higher noise pollution, reduce air quality, and a decline in the overall livability of the community. It could also negatively affect property values and alter the character of neighborhoods that have developed around quieter, local-road environments.
Of particular concern is the presence of multiple schools in the vicinity of the proposed corridor on the Gatineau side. Many children walk, cycle, or are driven to and from these schools on a daily basis, requiring them to cross or travel near the proposed route. This includes school bus operation which already contribute to traffic activity during school arrival and dismissal times. Introducing a major transportation corridor into an area with significant school-related pedestrian and vehicle traffic will increase congestion, create more complex traffic movements, and heighten safety concerns for some of the community's most vulnerable road users.
Safety concerns related to the steep hill

The corridor includes a steep hill that presents risks for all road users, particularly during winter conditions. Vehicles travelling downhill or uphill may experience reduced stopping distances, while large trucks could face additional challenges like maintaining safe speeds. Introducing a heavily travelled corridor on a steep grade could increase the likelihood of collisions and create ongoing operational and maintenance challenges given the extreme loads which will physically stress the pavement on this hill. This is not an isolated concern, as similar safety and operational obstacles are regularly observed on the steep sections of Highway 50 toward Montreal, where heavy truck traffic leads to reduced speeds, braking concerns, bottlenecks and increased risks during adverse weather conditions.

Avoiding infrastructure decisions that may repeat past mistakes by prioritizing a less disruptive corridor alternative seems the better option.
