I am a resident of the Buckingham neighbourhood of Gatineau, on the extreme East, and my work brings me to several parts of Ottawa as far out as Kanata but also in the Orleans area. The various bottlenecks generated by each bridge on the Ottawa, Gatineau and Rideau rivers and the segmented make-up of downtown Ottawa and downtown Gatineau are exponential multipliers for commute times. Across my few work sites, the unimpeded commute averages from 38 to 44 minutes, excluding if there is construction work - which is necessary from time to time. The additional time required at rush hour can average between 30 to 75 minutes depending on location, excluding accidents, closures related to events or weather. Using public transit would be of no help, calculated itinerary times averaging from 135 to 200 min, usually with 4 or 5 legs of transportation. This situation is not unfortunate just for me. Many acquaintances who live close to the new proposed bridge site face very similar situations for both car and public transit. The establishment of a new bridge connection east would enable to diffuse much traffic in downtown core, enable new options for inter-city public transit, reduce trucking downtown and mitigate the impacts of downtown events on traffic (BlueFest, Army Run, etc.). In Canada, major infrastructure of the sorts were mainly envisioned and created in the 60's and 70's, and since then hightened public communications have often boosted public opinion and impeded such major projects. This created a major lag in forecasts for future major infrastructure, and Canada is now facing major overlap of significant infrastructure needs. The time to act is now.
