How many of the downtown bridges are at their end-of-life? More than a few! While quaint old steel bridges may be repurposed with lower weight capacity, eventually they have to come down. Better they be demolished than they fall down. That said, one federal government, two provincial governments, two municipal government, and other regional or mandated governments must all agree before anything can be built. I'm waiting for one level or another to change its mind and oppose the plan. Then in that most Ottawa of situations, nothing will happen.  We should never forget that the Vanier Parkway terminates at Beechwood Avenue because unelected busybodies in the local community lobbied to stop it. I fear the same 'Oh no! Think of the bunnies!', simplistic arguments will overwhelm the conversation. The fact remains, bridges need to be built, they need to be maintained, and every few decades they need to be replaced. PLEASE! Let's get on with this initiative.
