Say No to the Data Center: A Short-Sighted Mistake

Text

We strongly oppose the construction of the proposed data center in our community. While tech infrastructure is often framed as progress, this project is anything but forward-thinking.

- Temporary by design: The facility is already slated for demolition in 2025. Why should our community bear the environmental and infrastructural burden for a project with such a short shelf life?

- High resource consumption: Data centers are notorious for their massive energy and water demands which is a serious concern in an era of climate crisis and resource scarcity, Calgary's pipeline infrastructure needing to be upgraded, currently on water restrictions city wide due to failing infrastructure.

- Minimal community benefit: These centers are largely automated, offering few long-term jobs or economic returns to local residents.

- Environmental and noise impact: Construction and operation will bring noise, traffic, and potential ecological disruption and all for a facility that will vanish in less than two years.

We deserve sustainable development that invests in our future, not a disposable project that leaves behind a scar on our landscape. Let’s demand better.
