My husband and I were both born and raised in the Peace River country of Northern Alberta and have chosen to raise our family here. We have a family grain farm, and I am a Chartered Accountant.
The proposal to build a nuclear facility along our beautiful Peace River is a cause for alarm and deep emotional stress for many residents, including myself.
This project is greatly affecting our community. There are those that only see dollar signs, and the rest that only want to preserve and protect our home and our environment. I worry about my children’s future and my grandchildren. My family comes from a long line of trappers, hunters and fishers. I am worried if the animals and fish in the Peace River will be safe to consume. What if another larger earthquake happens, there was an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude in 2022, what if the next one is worse?I know how hard it is to get trades, etc. in the north. Will they be able to get enough employees, as currently this is a huge problem for most businesses in the Peace Region. What about the infrastructure to house these many people? A project this scale would completely change our Region and County.
When I went to the information sessions put on by our County, a resident asked what the risks are, and Dr. Neil Alexander deflected the question. If they cannot give us any information to make an informed decision, then why would we want this project to happen? I left the meeting frustrated and disappointed.
I absolutely DO NOT favor hosting a nuclear facility anywhere in Alberta. There are just too many risks. I feel that Energy Alberta is targeting the north because they feel there are not enough people to raise much fuss but they underestimate my love and commitment to this land. There are many other better options other than Nuclear that have less risky consequences.
I am very against the proposed Nuclear project. I am so afraid of all the negative consequences. I DO NOT want radioactive waste stored in my backyard.- Submitted by
