  • I'm pleased there is attention on this ongoing issue, as the flooding has been a problem for several years, and impacted both residential and commercial landowners.  Having owned significant amount of acreage in the area and operating business here for 30 years, I have concerns.  We are in consultation with an engineering firm to further understand how the diversion of water will affect our property.  Until there is clarity on the impact on us - I'm not in agreement.

  •   Good afternoon,   I am writing regarding my concerns about the Sussex Region Diversion Project.   Firstly we (my husband and I) were not notified that this project was happening.  We only found out on Friday, the 7th of February, 2025, thus due diligence on the part of the Town of Sussex was not followed.     I live just 3 minutes outside of the Town of Sussex so any diversion of water proposed by this project will affect our property.  We already experience flooding when the ground is saturated and have made all the appropriate steps to mitigate damage to our property.  We are concerned that this proposed project will only exacerbate the challenges we already have with flooding.     We as property owners have our own septic and well which we are responsible to maintain.  We are concerned about the safety of our potable water if this project goes through.  There is no indication in the proposal of support, testing or compensation for repairs for any damage that may incur due to this proposal.   We are concerned as well of our property values going down as a result of the damage this inflow of water will cause.  The very problem the Town of Sussex is trying to address for the citizens the flooding affects will be passed on to the property owners living quite literally next to them.  Also, will our taxes increase to pay for this project that may ruin those affected financially?   Upon reading the project document there doesn't seem to be a clear plan for sustainability.  The Town of Sussex still permits homes and ...

  • I would like to express my concerns on Sussex Region Flood Diversion Project   1. I grew up on the farm at the end of Aiton Road. When we were children (I am 80 now) on the east side of the railroad bridge there was clear evidence of a long house Aboriginal shelter. At the North end of the bridge at that time it was a blueberry field and you could clearly see the outline of the long house. Also at the East end of the bridge on the south side of the tracks there is an Aboriginal burial ground. Some years ago CN leased or bought land along the track to build a road to do maintenance on the bridge and ran into the evidence of the burial ground. They abandoned the road and maintained the bridge from the railroad tracks.   2. As far as I can see reading the information there is no allowance for ice flow and ice jambs. Over my time I have seen a lot of ice moving and ice jamming up in places along the Kennebecasis River and also Trout Creek. There will have to be provisions if ice gets jammed up along the new channel.   3.There will be a lot of properties outside of Sussex that will be affected by the extra water. That will cause a lot of law suits against the town. These people will be put at risk and will have a right to sue the town and will win their case. The people of Sussex could be on the hook for a lot of tax dollars.   4. A million dollars does not go very far when it comes to the cost of construction around water. There should be a revised estimation done with the real cost.   5. The fact that nobody outside the town has been contacted is evidence that the town knows they are ...

This plan is an expensive undertaking ($36M+) and will likely have ongoing costs as well though those have not yet been provided at this stage. The plan will leave the most vulnerable properties in harms way (as stated in early documentation in the plan) and puts other properties at greater risk. These most vulnerable homes are the ones that, when flooding occurs, cost us the most money and will continue to cost us money in the future if left in harms way. This means the cost savings and mitigation created by this proposed “mitigation plan” will likely be minimal and thus the KWRC asks why this approach. Has the thought of removing homes from the flood risk areas and reclaiming those areas as functioning floodplain been investigated and costed out? In a CTV news release it was stated that “Desjardins Group announced that as of Feb. 1, it would no longer offer new mortgages for properties in "0-20 year" flood zones — where there is a five per cent chance of flooding in any given year — because of what it called the rising impact of climate change.   • I am writing with concerns I have regarding the proposed flooding prevention methods that are being planned for the river flowing between the highway and the CN bridge behind our home on Adam Lane. I have lived on this land for many years and have watched the natural seasonal water rise and flow. The water system in this area cannot manage any more water being forced though its channels than it does now for a regular spring high water. The water will not be able to flow through the field and out through the narrow opening under the existing CN train bridge and especially with the increased amounts they are planning on adding to the regular spring water flow. There would not be enough change in the elevation to allow for water to flow out past the are below the train bridge. We have our own sewage and water system that may be affected by a change in the water. The land in this area is sandy and the ground water is the main source of potable water for our home, same as other homes in this area. High water coming in from industrial sites in large volumes could damage the eco system as well as contaminate our water and destroy our sewage system. This will also put our property in a flood zone which will significantly decrease our home's value by the actions taken by the town. We were never contacted or advised about any of the proposals that the town was planning. A very underhanded and deceptive way to carry out any plans of this magnitude in our backyard. I am asking that you reconsider taking any further action until this project has been considered for all the residents and business of the area.

  • In the impact assement there is no mention of debris (very large and small trees ,high gravel bars etc) being removed outside the proposed area.Is there any plans? Being a resident of Trout Creek I have witnessed many high water events changing the water course causing land loss from erosion and large areas of land wasted. Infrastructure has and is being damaged regulary.Has there been any impact assement or investigation held  to question the impact of debris and sediment flowing from the Upper Trout Creek ,Parsons Brook and Wards Creek into Sussex Corner and Sussex? Should this not also be a consideration?  Also, are there any plans for maintenance of the new proposed and existing water courses?  For example, what will be done years from now when sediment and debris have travelled from Upper Trout creek into Sussex Corner and beyond. ,

Currently, the river is used for various activities, including docking kayaks and canoes, swimming, and fishing. Can you provide any modeling or visual projections on how this increase in water volume could impact these activities and the stability of the riverbanks? 2. Impact on Cabins and Tent Areas: How will the increased water volume affect my cabins and tenting areas along the property? What measures will be taken to prevent damage to these structures in the event of flooding? 3. Impact on Wells: How will the increased volume of water impact my six wells? After a flooding event, would you be willing to cover the costs of testing all my wells and providing yearly tests to ensure their safety and water quality? Currently, my wells are tested annually and have no issues, but I am concerned about the potential risks after flooding. 4.   • What is going to be done for the land owners along the Kennebecasis river whose properties will experience substantially more flood waters. As an active dairy farm on the Plumweseep Cross Rd we farm a substantial amount of river front land. If this land is affected by increased flood waters it could impact our crops, ability to get equipment on that land, and the total acreage we have avaiable to work. Having read through the report I don't see any consideration for this and would like to know the anticipated impacts this could have on us and what is being done to mittigate any potential impacts.
