Transportation of Nuclear Radioactive Waste Products

I vehemently oppose both the transportation of nuclear waste along highways 11 and 17 to a proposed storage facility near Ignace as well as the storage of said waste anywhere in Northwestern Ontario. Both highways are highly dangerous throughout the year due poor maintenance, poorly trained transport drivers and weather conditions. Every year there are multiple fatalities in all seasons on both highways. The situation is worsening. Most people, myself included, know of someone who has died due to traffic accidents on these treacherous highways, both of which are in desperate need of twinning. Every time an accident occurs, the highways are closed for many hours. The Trans Canada effectively comes to a standstill during such incidents. Northern Ontario elected NDP members videoed the dangers of these highways earlier in 2026 and raised this issue at Queen’s Park. The Nipigon River Bridge, which both highways use, is a bottleneck. We live in dangerous times. If this bridge should be damaged or destroyed, travel across our country by highway becomes impossible. Those of us who live on either highway along which the proposed waste is to be transported should have been properly consulted. Transportation of nuclear waste is hazardous. The ground where it was produced is polluted. It shouldn’t be transported to a different region more than 1000 Km away. Our region is not a garbage dumb. We have never benefited from nuclear power and it is an insult that we should carry the burden of the waste and the potential for nuclear disaster in a region known for pristine waters and a diversity of both flora and fauna. I must speak out for my grandchildren and my future great grandchildren.
