Township of Ignace Submission – Recommendations on Draft TISG

The Corporation of the Township of Ignace is pleased to submit the attached Documentation Package, “Recommendations for Amendments to the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines,” as part of the public comment period on the Draft Integrated Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines for the Deep Geological Repository for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project.

The Township wishes to express its appreciation to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for the care and diligence they have brought to this integrated review process, and to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization for its sustained, transparent engagement with Ignace and surrounding communities. We also acknowledge NWMO’s success in bringing together a team of world‑class professionals, recognized leaders in their respective fields, to advance this project. We recognize the professionalism and expertise that all parties bring to this work and have confidence that it is being applied to ensure the Project is advanced in a manner that is safe, responsible, and aligned with the long‑term public interest.

As a willing and informed host community, the Township remains supportive of the Deep Geological Repository Project and of the continued efforts of NWMO and the regulators to move forward in a way that is grounded in safety, science, and stewardship. The comments in the attached report are offered in a constructive spirit, with the goal of helping to strengthen the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines so that they fully reflect the importance of nuclear and public safety, recognize the Township’s role as a host community, and ensure that socio‑economic effects and opportunities are considered at the appropriate local scale.

The Township of Ignace is grateful for the opportunity to participate in this stage of the process and looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with IAAC, CNSC, NWMO, Indigenous partners, and neighbouring municipalities as the Project proceeds through the impact assessment and licensing phases.
