Good Afternoon.
I have been a resident of Ignace since 2010. My name is Diana Schmidt.
My concerns regarding the DRG are as follows:
1RTATION plans absolutely needs to be included in this assessment. The people and towns along the transportation routes need to be informed and have a chance to speak to having this High level radioactive nuclear waste coming through their town via rail and the Hwy. My husband and I are both retired truckers and know the carnage on our Northern Hwys.
2. SAFETY plans
Concerns with regards to the safety plans on the transportation routes and at the proposed DGR site. What plans are in place for this and first responders and the people should an accident occur.
3. Concerns regarding our water sheds and environment along with wild life. We already have had a Mercury spill at Grassy Narrows and they are still suffering from that.
. I believe that after spending 14 years researching the scientific data, attending many meetings and events there's a lot more that needs to be done. Man has never buried HIgh Level radioactive nuclear waste in n the ground.
There's many fractures in the area of the proposed DGR, many Earthquakes as well. Yes those earthquakes are not big at this time however, one never knows when a big one could hit
As a resident I personally have and continue to see great division between the people of my community. I have spoken to many people who travel here to fish and hunt. They state " If this Nuclear waste comes here they won't be back". This will have a huge impact on our tourist attractions. I believe NWMO hasn't been transparent on this project from the beginning. They have failed to hold any information sessions on the dangers of this experiment despite being requested for many years. I believe that if the residents had known before the "Vote" which included 16 year olds the outcome would have been different. If the " Vote" was to happen to today it would also be different.
The concerns regarding the NWMO contract for the Host Community is appalling to say the least. Many including myself feel we have been ripped off so to speak. Ignace won't be able to handle our own residents due to infrastructure never mind more people. I believe Trust is lost with NWMO by many people.
Ignace is a beautiful town with many opportunities available to us. Nuclear Waste is not one of them Let's diversify Ignace into a beautiful town it's meant to be.
