Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada's Used Nuclear Fuel Project
Lack of accountability

- Text
The Deep Geological Repository proposed for Canada's Used Nucleal Fuel Project lacks scientific, legal and process accountability and credibility.
- Science: No country has mastered safe and accountable nuclear waste management. The long-term safety of deep repositories for high-level nuclear waste cannot be promised, However, science is certain of eventual leakage of radioactivity and of groundwater contamination affecting living cells and human and environmental health for future generations.
- Law: It violates the UNDRIP- Act. The limited quick consultations do not demonstrate the obligatory full information and free prior informed consent by the local First Nations.
- Process: Impact versus Risk: Impact Assessments evaluate effects after the fact. An evidence-based, transparent and rigorous Risk Assessment process involving all affected federal departments and agencies can avoid wrong decisions before fatefully dangerous actions are taken and prevent lengthy and expensive court battles
