I am writing because I am concerned about the proposed nuclear waste site near Ignace, Ontario. In particular, I am very concerned and am opposed to the transportation of  nuclear waste along Ontario's highways. The highways are extremely busy, and the accident rates are relatively high. Even just one accident along a highway could cause irreparable and spatially-extensive damage to biodiversity (i.e. individual animals and their populations) at a time when Canada has also committed to Canada's 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy to fulfill our commitments to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. I am very concerned that the transportation will increase the level of traffic on Ontario Highways - which comes with significant impacts to biodiversity, air quality, noise pollution, water quality, and climate change.  I am concerned that public consultation has not been sufficient, in particular the comment period has been short and First Nations in the affected areas have not been consulted. I am a senior ecologist conducting research and restoration in biodiversity science for the federal government. I have a vested concern in the transportation of nuclear waste because I own a piece of property that is near the proposed transportation route, which I also recently donated to a Land Trust specifically for the conservation of nature and long term biodiversity preservation. I have made a personal and financial contribution (aka sacrifice) to sustainability in the region, and I do not want to see any degradation to my contribution to a healthy future in the region.
