Watersheds at risk

In my opinion, this plan to put nuclear waste in the Canadian shield is risky and ill-advised. First of all, nuclear development is not a good way to meet climate commitments, since not only does it create pollution at all stages, not to mention difficult-to-manage waste, but it has a high cost relative to renewables and has links to the spread of nuclear weapons. As for this particular site, it sits at the headwaters of an important watershed. In addition to the long-term threats posed by the storage itself, a large amount of dangerous waste would have to be transported through an environmentally sensitive area. Furthermore, thirteen First Nations have declared their opposition to the project.

It is essential to ensure that a full impact assessment be done, as well as a public examination of transportation of nuclear waste.
