• Here is the response to your question.    The water comes from all three ponds. It is pumped from Muddy Pond which is connected to Noels Pond to Gull/Mine Pond. Our organization overwhelmingly supports renewable energy development, and we know that development needs to be done with people and communities’ interests put first. We understand that the vast majority of people in the communities on and around Port au Port, most of whom are Indigenous, do not support this project as it stands because of the negative impact it poses to the ecosystems and communities on the peninsula. As such, we think it is critical that Nujio’qonik undergo a federal assessment to ensure that it meets the high bar set by Environment and Climate Change Canada.    The Council of Canadians recognizes that wind power is one of the most affordable and reliable renewable energy solutions with which we can address the climate crisis. As we build renewable energy production in Canada, projects that are community-led and -supported, and/or developed and run by the public sector must be the standard. With respect to marine terminal operations and the applicability of the Physical Activities Regulations, you requested further information on the following: 1. whether the Port of Stephenville is able to accommodate ships greater than 25,000 DWT without expanding the marine terminal; 2. the potential for ships greater than 25,000 DWT to be used for the Project; 3. details about the two temporary marine loading sites; and 4. details about the jettyless offloading system being investigated to minimize port development. Responses 1) The Port of Stephenville routinely accommodates vessels larger than 25,000 DWT using existing infrastructure. Each year, bulk carriers offload road salt, construction supplies, and asphalt, while cargo vessels load scrap metal at the Port. The Port of Stephenville supports local fishing and aquaculture industries as well as Canadian Coast Guard operations. The Port of Stephenville was acquired by World Energy GH2 in May 2023. Routine operations at the Port will continue separately from Project Nujio’qonik. 2) There are no plans for the Project to export ammonia using vessels larger than 25,000 DWT. We strongly support their request for a full Impact Assessment of the proposed Project "Nujio'qonik" GH2, which threatens to irrevocably damage their homeland, and which, whatever the outcome, will be precedent- setting. As citizens of Canada and of Newfoundland and Labrador, we are deeply alarmed by the threats this proposal poses to the vulnerable environment of the Peninsula, and to the Indigenous and non-Indigenous people of the small local communities directly affected. Their position is like that of the canaries in the coal mine – warning us about dangers that we might not otherwise immediately perceive ourselves.
