Mitigating Climate Change through Solid Waste Management in Southern Jordan
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Through the project components and activities, it is planned to enhance solid waste management in the project area, targeting the mitigation of climate change through proper solid waste management (SWM) and reduced carbon footprint through MSW transfer station and promotion of recycling and circular economy within the project area, thus contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The project will construct a clean material recovery facility for dry waste which includes mechanical sorting line for different kinds of recyclables and other material in addition to machinery for processing of these material such as crushing, shredding, and compression within the existing transfer station in the Shoubak District/Ma'an Governorate. The infrastructure and equipment within the existing transfer station will be rehabilitated to maintain its original capacity, allowing it to continue processing MSW coming from the service area, and maintain the ability/flexibility to process further quantities coming from areas nearby the original service area in Shoubak, such as Petra Development & Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) as per the relevant master plans for the region. The project will mainly enhance the Health, Safety and Environment conditions within the existing transfer station. The station will be located on a 26,000 m2 plot of land. It is designed to accommodate different types of solid waste (including organic waste) generated from household activities in the western areas of Ma'an Governorate. The site was previously a landfill for solid waste that had been closed since 2004, and has been used as a transfer station since.
Despite being required to develop a preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment as per the national regulations, a full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study has been carried out to analyze and develop the environmental impact and social evaluation of the rehabilitation project of the waste transfer station and the addition to the construction and operation of a clean MRF (metal, plastic, cardboard, etc.) in the Shobak area, while collecting additional data through a social survey for the nearest 30 households and the relevant CBOs/NGOs in the area. The ESIA findings and the ESMP will be available for the public, especially in the project area to allow for enhanced activities control after the approval of the ESIA.
