• Maintaining the current bridge design that Alexandra Bridge has now ensures that heritage is respected for those who live in Ottawa and Canada, while also it is of less expense than dismantling and building all new.  There will be a double cost for the dismantlement, for the action itself and for the enviroment.  Recycling of any materials while preserving heritage is the best option, and the most inexpensive for the taxpayer.  In comparison to other capital cities, there are bridges that are exposed to similar climates that Ottawa has and, they still maintain bridges that are older than Alexandra Bridge, in order to keep their heritage intact.  An interprovicial bridge such as this gives cultural identity to a community and a nation. Once destroyed it cannot be rebuilt in the same manner, in addition to loss of this example of Canadian engineering.   Bridges of this esteem are often only dismantled if catastrophic destruction happens to them such as in war, not due to inability to find solutions on how to repair and replace parts with new.  A new Alexandra bridge could be fashioned in the same way, keeping its history while also maintaining its safety.

• I would really like to see more consideration taken toward rehabilitation and preservation of the bridge. This is a landmark bridge in Ottawa that should be preserved and not by a photograph. The Port Credit Bridge in Mississauga was destined for demolition but was saved after public outcry. The same should happen here. Canada needs to do a better job of keeping and protecting its heritage and historical assets. Keep them out of the landfill. A plaque to remember the bridge doesn't cut it.

•  I do not believe that the bridge cannot be maintained and repaired, and have the historic engineering and design be kept in place. I believe that maintenance and keeping a good design, will be less financially troublesome than creating a new design that is not as well suited, and does not have any historic value, and has the potential to be an eysore, and will also require maintenance as bridges do. The Alexandra has a pedestrian element and a historic element, which are already in place, and already associated and embedded in the history of Ottawa, and can very well be maintained and repaired at less expense than building an entirely new bridge. Options to preserve the bridge have not been fully explored and genuinely considered.. A new bridge will likely be problematic.   Stephen Cousin

• It is foolhardy to needlessly demolish structures which embody as much carbon as this bridge unless you have proved beyond all doubts there is no other alternative.  Please continue to investigate other options, as was recommended by the project proponent's own consultants (MMM 2018),  As well, in a climate crisis, with Canada's record of failing to meet all its previous carbon reduction targets, it is just UNFORGIVABLE to build a bridge which will encourage automobile traffic over other lreduced carbon or even carbon-neutral modes. • The Alexandra Bridge should be preserved and rehabilitated for continued use as it is a significant piece of national engineering history, and has high heritage value to the community.  The basis of the decision to replace the bridge should be reviewed given: The interest by citizens to preserve this bridge. It is part of the skyline and a feature identified with Ottawa and Gatineau, much like bridges in other cities. It is feasible to restore the bridge based on other examples of historic bridges being restored in Canada and around the world. The economic reasons and conditions for the replacement have changed since the original studies and analysis were made, where it may make more economic sense to keep the bridge. The parameters for rehabilitating this bridge can be readily determined, and a team engaged rapidly to work on it, versus the time it would take to have an international design competition, undertake the design, and build an innovative bridge design. There are risks to pursuing an innovative bridge design that may lead to longer delivery times, costs overruns, and possibly having to deal with design and construction defects that come with innovative designs. It is possible that contemporary bridge designs and materials would not last as long as the Alexandra bridge under the same use conditions, and/or failure to do regular maintenance. A rehabilitated Alexandra Bridge with improvements to details, materials and maintenance procedures could last longer, based on other historic bridges that are even older and are still in use. Alexandra Bridge is the most central bridge for accessing arts organizations, institutions and arts events between Ottawa and Gatineau, and I am very concerned about the impact on community connectivity,  ease of movement - especially for those who depend on walking or cycling across this bridge, as to walk to another and double-back would make many of my colleagues late to work!
