Re:  Montem Resources’ Tent Mountain Coal Redevelopment Project

Dear Impact Assessment Agency of Canada,

The Government of Alberta, its corporate holdings (including the Alberta Energy Regulator and the Canadian Energy Centre), and its political masters at the International Democratic Union are functionally and effectively an extension of the global fossil fuel industry; as such, it is clearly and utterly incapable of ethical and robust environmental and sociological oversight while under the control of Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party.

Therefore, it is incumbent on the Government of Canada as expressed through the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to provide the necessary oversight on Montem Resources’ Tent Mountain proposal as was the case with Riversdale Resources’ Grassy Mountain proposal by subjecting the proposal to the rigour of a full Environmental Impact Assessment.

Over the course of the last decade as expressed through my outlet, the Crowsnest Journal I have researched and reported on environmental concerns exposing numerous environmental crimes and an abhorrent lack of functional oversight by provincial agencies.

In concert with journalistic endeavors, I’ve prompted and involved myself in many investigations which have resulted in administrative penalties and successful criminal actions including federal convictions under the Species-at-Risk Act. The opinions expressed above are a frank distillation of this experience.

Specific examples of the structural and ethical incompetence of the current Government of Alberta include the premier’s recent smear campaign in which he high-jacked the Alberta legislature to craft unsupported propaganda, Stephan Harper’s insinuation into the United Conservative Party and the functions of government by extension, and the fact the Alberta Energy Regulator is wholly financed by the fossil fuel industry which provided significant input into the structure and function, or dysfunction, of the regulator.

Plainly, federal intervention is now required on all proposals in Alberta with the potential to affect air quality, downstream water users, First Nations, and the accelerating global climate emergency as Montem Resources’ proposal clearly does.

Beyond this proposal, all federal ministries tasked with environmental oversight ought to be aware of Alberta’s current incapacity as should ministries which may be affected by the fallout of this incapacity.

I trust the meagerness of Montem’s dubious proposal, when combined with the rigour of scientific review and the information and opinions provided within the received commentary, will serve to further support not only my statements of concern, but the need for broad federal intervention in Alberta on behalf of Albertans, fellow Canadians, and all who call Earth home.

Thank you for your consideration and review.

Sincerely,

Kevin Turner
