No Coal

This project should not be approved. Albertans have overwhelmingly rejected the notion of expanded coal mining in the province and want to see the industry retired. Increasing coal production does not fit within Canada's own climate or environmental targets; it does not align with the G7's announcement that it will stop international financing of coal projects; and it does not align with the International Energy Agency's call for immediately ending investments in coal mines in order to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Bold action is needed in order to mitigate the effects of anthropogenic climate change, many of which are already occuring. Canada cannot be caught talking out both sides of its mouth-- preaching the need for this bold action while also increasing our own coal production. This would be utterly unacceptable. Furthermore, Coalspur Mines' tactic of splitting the project to avoid a federal environmental review was underhanded and, if allowed, would set a dangerous precedent for future projects which would otherwise be subject to a review. Reject this application.
