Report for Regional Assessment Working Group. Swift Creek Consulting, Squamish, BC. 102 pp. Summary With the prospect of billions of dollars of investment in mining and roads and other infrastructure in the Ring of Fire region, the high costs of living are squarely in focus for community members of the region – a mostly Indigenous population across more than a dozen First Nations communities. Understandably, people in the region cannot stomach the thought of billions spent on mines and comfortable work camps for mine workers and one’s own community having to continue to deal with numerous serious challenges. This report and accompanying video attempt to bring together and capture the multiple, interwoven dimensions of the high cost-of-living in remote communities in the Ring of Fire region, to support and inform the Regional Assessment of the Ring of Fire. In our study for the Regional Assessment Working Group (RAWG), composed of delegates from 15 First Nations communities and staff of the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, completed over the December 2025 to April 2026 time period, we gathered research ...

ORA advocates for effective policy and legislation to ensure that development affecting Ontario rivers is environmentally and socially sustainable. Executive Summary: The Ring of Fire Regional Assessment (Regional Assessment) is fundamentally undermined by a critical flaw: it has no binding authority over project approvals. At the same time, the federal government has already declined to conduct an Impact Assessment for a major mining project in the region, demonstrating that development is proceeding ahead of the science. The report itself confirms that baseline environmental data are insufficient and must be established before development. Yet there is no requirement to pause approvals until this work is complete. This is a known failure in environmental assessment practice—projects proceed, impacts occur, and baseline conditions are never properly understood. While an online public information session was held on March 11, 2026, the process still relies on centralized in-person sessions and does not clearly guarantee accessible virtual participation at every key stage. Meaningful consultation in a region of ...

  • April 3, 2026 Governors Ranch Elementary School 5354 S. Field St. Littleton, CO 80123 To Whom It May Concern: I am Carter.B, a student at GRE (Governors-Ranch-Elementary) school, in 4th grade, and I’m writing a prompt to write to an expert on a natural wonder like you, and I picked the Ring of Fire wanting to know more about it. I am very curious about it, and want to know more about it. I know that the gas given by the volcanoes is toxic to humans, but does it affect fish, and does the water have to do with it? Can that gas go throughout the entire ocean? I also have the knowledge that most volcanoes harm human things and create islands sometimes, but does the Ring of Fire affect civilization, like the coast of Japan, and what makes them go off? Plus, I’ve heard that the Great Barrier Reef is visible from space, but can you see the Ring of Fire from space, or is it invisible from space? And, like, I’ve heard that a mountain is formed by tectonic plates moving, but is that how volcanoes form, or is it lava moving up and cooling rapidly to form a hill with a hole in the top? Thank you for reading my letter. Please respond soon. Sincerely: Carter P. Buys

  •   April 3, 2026 Governor’s Ranch Elementary School  5354 S. Feld St. Littleton, CO 80123   To whom It May Concern:  My name is Selah Fennell and I am a fourth grade student at Governor's Ranch Elementary School. In writing class we have been researching natural wonders of the world and the Ring of fire fascinated me so much and it would be so great if you could please try and answer the questions down below that would be greatly appreciated.  First, it is understood that Volcanologists most likely know when a volcano will erupt. Could you please explain how they know and what some of the signs are?  Here are some more questions about the ring of fire and volcanoes. How long did it take for the Ring of Fire to form and how did it form? How is the lava formed? Can animals or people live near the ring of fire? Have you visited the Ring of Fire and if so how many times? How often does the Ring of Fire erupt? How long does an eruption last? How long has the Ring of Fire been active? Lastly, How many times has the Ring of Fire erupted in its lifetime.  Thank you for taking your time to read my letter. You must be very busy. I am very excited to hear back from you if you have the time.   Sincerely, Selah L. Fennell

Attachment ANISHNABE KWE RESPONSE TO RING OF FIRE ASSESSMENT

  • Évaluation régionale dans la région du Cercle de feu
  • Auteur : CONSTANCE LAKE FIRST NATION
  • Numéro de référence : 256
  • Présenté : 2026-04-02 15 h 47
  • The Regional Assessment of the Ring of Fire cannot be treated as just another procedural checkbox—it must be a genuine, transparent, and community-driven process. Our lands are not vacant resource zones; they are homelands with deep cultural, environmental, and economic significance to First Nations. Any assessment that moves forward without full, informed, and meaningful participation from affected First Nations risks repeating the same failures we’ve seen for decades—decisions made externally, benefits flowing outward, and communities left to deal with the long-term impacts. We need clarity on governance: Who is making decisions, and who is being left out? We need full access to information, not summaries or controlled narratives. We need capacity funding that allows our communities to engage on equal footing—not as stakeholders, but as rights holders. This is about more than development. It’s about jurisdiction, accountability, and respect. If the Regional Assessment is to have any legitimacy, it must reflect the voices, priorities, and consent of the people who have lived on and stewarded these lands long before any mining proposal existed. Anything less is not reconciliation—it’s repetition.

A participatory scenario matrix approach was used to define four contrasting scenarios based on two key dimensions: Indigenous Governance and Development Pressure. These dimensions form the axes of a 2×2 matrix that generates four contrasting scenarios: • Scenario 1: Indigenous-Led Planning – Strong Indigenous governance and low development pressure, with First Nations guiding land use, stewardship, and community- based development. • Scenario 2: Gradual Change – Low development pressure and limited Indigenous governance, resulting in slow, uneven growth and ongoing community service, infrastructure, and governance gaps. • Scenario 3: Co-Governed Growth – High development ...

  • As an Ontario citizen I do not agree with the development of the Ring of Fire. To sell off the land to a company, who will dig up the property with zero concern for those living near that area, is completely unacceptable. I do not want to be putting money in billionaires pockets at my and other people’s expense. No matter the amount of money it will bring it is not reasonable or excusable. Please think of the peoples lives who will be affected negatively by this decision, as there are many people who disagree with these choices.

  • Deny the ring of fire exploration/extraction industries. This is the second largest intact system and it must be kept intact. Unleashing the vast amount of carbon being stored will have profound effects on our climate globally. The "jobs" and "profits" being touted by Doug Ford and PM Carney are a pipe dream. Protect what is left of our rapidly deteriorating natural world. The caribou, the moose, the spruce, to name a few, must be protected.

This problem is due to sulfur oxidation intermediates (SOI), formed in the milling process, oxidizing in onsite tailings impoundments. The resulting acid generation must be treated before the water leaves site, or it will have negative environmental impacts. At the initiation of this thesis, SOI oxidation had been recently attributed to sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB) genera such as Halothiobacillus, Thiomonas, Thiobacillus, Thiovirga, and Sulfurovum. Although linked to SOB, these acid generating processes were not yet explained by specific enzymatic mechanisms. In the literature, the sulfur metabolic enzymes are highly conserved. They fall into three pathways: the complete sulfur oxidation (cSOx) pathway, the incomplete sulfur oxidation (iSOx) plus reverse dissimilatory sulfur reduction (rDSR) pathway, and the tetrathionate intermediate (S4I) pathway. Additionally, some sulfur enzymes do not fall neatly into these categories, and other reactions may yet be discovered. We have yet to clarify which pathways are present in mine tailings impoundments, which conditions promote them, and – most critically – how much acid results. To fill this gap, I used ...

  • 1 Recent findings and publications from collaborations in the far north of Ontario – Climate Change and Multiple Stressor Aquatic Research Programme, Laurentian University. January 2019 Bill Keller (bkeller@laurentian.ca) and Chantal Sarrazin-Delay (csarrazindelay@laurentian.ca). o Lakes across the far north of Ontario differ greatly because of differences in the land, especially in the geology and topography. More southern lakes are on the rugged Canadian Shield and they sit on hard granite bedrock. The more northern lakes are on the Hudson Bay Lowlands in a much flatter landscape of soft limestone bedrock. The water chemistry characteristics were found to be generally different in lakes on the Shield compared to the Lowlands. However, in the area where the Shield and Lowlands meet near the “Ring of Fire”, there was no chemistry difference between the lakes. The thick cover of peat and materials (rocks, sand, gravel) deposited by glaciers in this area means that the water is less affected by the bedrock below. (MacLeod et al. 2017) o The water in far north lakes on the Canadian Shield had more calcium, magnesium and total phosphorus than near north Shield lakes (south of 50°N). In the far north, there is much limestone, formed at the bottom of large ancient lakes or dropped by melting glaciers. The minerals in the soft limestone dissolve giving the water more nutrients and ions than similar lakes further south. The water of the Hudson Bay Lowland lakes often had less dissolved minerals because the thick cover of peat separates the lake water from the rock. BRIEFING NOTE Subject: Assessment of Ring of Fire and related technical consulting services Date: June 10, 2025 This briefing note summarizes feedback given to Anna Baggio of Wildlands League by Red- Dot3D Inc. (RD3D) about current discussions on development of the “Ring of Fire” in the Hudson Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario. RD3D is a geological consulting company that has provided technical advice and assistance to governments, industry, NGOs and individuals. Its speciality is mineral resource estimation and the accompanying technical reports. RD3D staff have served as experts in litigation and ar- bitration, and have developed best practice guidelines for governments and for standards- development organizations like the ASTM. They have also been consulted by journalists devel- oping articles on the Ring of Fire. • The economic value of the Ring of Fire, de- scribed by some as “limitless”, is unknown be- cause there has been no comprehensive as- sessment of the combined value of the many mineral concessions in the region. • When billions of dollars are needed to de- velop mining projects, the approach taken by publicly-traded mining companies, and re- quired by regulators, is to develop public technical reports that move from exploration studies through estimates of in-the-ground resources and, ultimately, to feasibility stud- ies that document the reserves, which are the subset of in-the-ground resources that are technically and economically viable. • The most frequently referenced public tech- nical report on a Ring of Fire project is the 2012 Eagle’s Nest feasibility study. This study, now ...

This is the second largest intact peat bog and you do NOT know the full impact of the destruction and how the enormous release of carbon will affect our entire planet. You need to start thinking about the long-term damage not the short term materialistic gains. We have a whole planet to think about, a planet now in it's fifth year of record-breaking climate disasters and heat, Carney and Ford! Not all of us live in an artificial environment! As a landscape covered by extensive peatland complexes, accumulating vegetation (and carbon) since de-glaciation, and tens of thousands of lakes, there is an opportunity to interpret past environmental changes from paleoecological records, and place current climatic and other environmental changes within a longer-term perspective.
