Re: Comments on Global First Power’s Project Description for the Micro Modular Reactor Project at Chalk River

Dear Aimee Rupert,
I spend 6 weeks every summer on an island in the Ottawa River, facing the Petawawa military base, only a few kilometers downriver from Chalk River.
The Ottawa River has been contaminated by the NRX reactor started up at Chalk River in 1947 and by the more powerful NRU reactor started up in 1957.
Since that period, the radioactive waste has not been adequately managed and the public has not been kept aware of the danger, particularly for those living along the Ottawa River below Chalk River. The proposed Micro Modular Reactor, or any other small modular nuclear reactor, represents a huge potential threat. A rigorous environmental assessment is absolutely required.
Sincerely,
Francis Style
