Cochrane Hill mine and the Saint Mary's River

Text

Allowing a 500 acre open pit mine and tailings pond at the proposed location poses too much ecological risk.  It would be an outright insult to the many volunteers and donors who have worked for years to restore this beautiful river and its imperilled salmon.  If Canada wants to hold its head up when negotiating with international players in the interests of salmon that return to our rivers, we just can't be permitting projects like this.  In addition to the ecological risks, the mine would greatly degrade the attractiveness of the area for tourism and would be a black mark on Nova Scotia in the national competition for nature and conservation-oriented visitors.
