In the 1980s the PC Lougheed administration funded a major project at the Alberta Geological Survey to evaluate Alberta coal quality. The evaluation of Alberta Mountain coal can be found here: https://static.ags.aer.ca/files/document/ESR/ESR_1989_02.pdf (I will also upload this report). Figure 28 of this report shows coal quality of the No. 1 and 2 seams. It shows the relatively poor quality of the No. 1 Seam. Figure 46 shows the regional rank (coal quality) of the SW Alberta (Kootenay) coal. It should be realized that this is a palinspastic map, which means that the locations of the samples were restored to their pre-deformation (mountain forming) position. The Grassy Mountain site resores to a location in BC. This report does not imclude BC coal data, but the coals cab be easily compared as Cornelis Kolijn did for the Grassy Mountain hearings.
I am disappointed that this report is nowhere used in the hearings about this potential coal mine. Previous mining companies such as Scurry Rainbow and Devon walked away from this property based on the data presented in this report.
