COAL STRIP MINES in the headwaters of Canada's prairie rivers, on Alberta's beautiful bighorn sheep ranges, overlooking streams that harbour threatened populations of native cutthroat and bull trout, devastating the source water areas for all of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.
I am asking you to put principle ahead of everything else when it comes to announcing a final decision on the Grassy Mountain open-pit coal mine north of Blairmore. Canada has committed to meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets that we need to live up to. And water security for Prairie Canada is far more important than putting more money into the pockets of Australian billionaires. And the habitat of federally listed threatened species needs to be restored, not polluted and degraded by strip mining.
