It is abundantly clear from the presented evidence that Taseko Mines Ltd.’s proposed “New Prosperity” gold and copper mine in the Cariboo-Chilcotin is an environmental disaster that will significantly impact the cultural survival of the Tsilhqot’in Indigenous Peoples. In Europe we are terribly concerned over Canada's negative treatment of First Nations especially in relation to the abuse of Aboriginal Title and RIghts. If the Federal Review Panel does not reject the Taseko Mines project, Canada will become even more notorious as a country which does not respect its Indigenous Peoples. Please listen to the countless experts who have advised against this destructive mining project including my colleague, Professor Nancy Turner, who refers to Teztan Biny as a "Cultural Keystone Place." I think it's appauling that this has dragged out to this stuation again. What's really worse is, that because of the 2nd Environmental Asessment Review Panel even happenning again, allows further creation of racial tension present before. This is condoning harrassment. Up to 70 per cent of sockeye salmon in the Fraser are expected to die before reaching spawning grounds, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. We heard during the Aqauatic Environment session that Pacific salmon face incredible obstacles to survival, and that the Chilko River populations are among the most resilient on the planet. And, with the tailings impoundment held back by a huge dam just upstream from Fish Lake, there is concern that water from the tailings pond could migrate into Fish Lake. While hiking there we met a couple (Jan and Warrick) who were hiking the same loop we had done and have remained close friends of ours. After finishing our hike we camped together next to Fish Lake, and even enjoyed some Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden that our friends had caught and cooked for us: Fish Lake indeed! When I read the first proposal for a mine near Fish Lake, I was absolutely shocked. How dare anyone ruin such a beautiful and pristine area? With some of the best trout fishing in BC? Then I heard that the lake would be partially drained and made into a series of tailing ponds, reduced to no more than a garbage bin. I was happy when I heard the decision to reject this proposal: finally, justice! Now that a new proposal is out in the open, I'm aghast at the chuzpah of it. A new proposal that is just as damaging, if not more. Storing the tailings from mine behind a dam upstream of Fish Lake sounds like the definition of risky to me. Not to mention the grizzlies living in the area for tens of thousands of years, and the opposition of First Nations to this project. Please reject this ...

A massive open pit mine is completely inconsistent with all of the innate beauty, natural ecosystems and First Nation traditional land use values of the area. Throughout North America and the world, open pit mines are notorious for the huge point source of pollution they cause and the unstable and leaking tailings ponds they leave behind. These tailings ponds will contain many heavy metal and other concentrates which have a poisonous and devastating effect on the natural environment. In this case, the leaching metal compounds will travel the rivers and water courses of the area and affect significant populations of fish, birds, deer, bears and people living throughout the region. Any economic benefits gained will be purely transitory and again, the history of these so-called economic mining developments throughout the world is littered with former boom towns, ghost towns and abandoned mines and infrastructure which pollute and endanger the regions in which they exist. By Taseko’s own admission, this new proposed mine would be even more environmentally damaging than the original mine rejected by the federal government in November, 2010. The current proposal would surround Fish Lake (Teztan Biny in Tsilhqot’in) with the second largest open pit gold and copper mine in Canada, closing it for 33 years and putting this important fish habitat at risk of contamination. Little Fish Lake would be destroyed. The many rivers and tributaries that flow from Fish Lake would face contamination risk including Fish Creek, the Taseko River, the Chilko River, the Chilcotin River and finally the Fraser River, fundamental to the life cycle of wild Pacific salmon. The project also threatens at-risk grizzly bear populations, as noted in the first federal environmental assessment. The Tsilhqot’in National Government strongly opposes this proposal because it would contaminate critical traditional lands and waters and impact the cultural survival of the Tsilhqot’in people. There is no information on who looks after the ongoing lake re-circulation after the mine life expires. Further Taseko does not specifically address the "left over" processing liquids which contain hazardous and toxic chemicals. It seems the chemicals and residues stay there in some form. There is no information on how much of the processing chemicals will be used over the mine life and considering that extracting gold and copper involves dangerous chemicals, this should be available.
