Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway Project Referred to a Substituted Review Panel of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region Environmental Impact Review Board

OTTAWA – September 27, 2010 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency announced today that the proposed Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway project located in the Northwest Territories has been referred to an environmental assessment by a review panel.

The federal review panel process will be substituted by the Environmental Impact Review Board (EIRB) process, in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. A project-specific agreement for the environmental assessment will be developed to outline the full terms and conditions for the substituted review.

As part of its Participant Funding Program, the Agency will make funding available to assist groups and individuals to participate in the environmental assessment of this project.

The Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk, Town of Inuvik, and the Government of the Northwest Territories are proposing to construct, operate, and maintain a 140 km all-weather Highway from the Town of Inuvik to the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
