Fairview Terminal Phase II Expansion Project – Availability of $100,000 to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – May 29, 2009 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is making available $100,000 under its Participant Funding Program (the Program) to assist groups or individuals to take part in the environmental assessment of the Fairview Terminal Phase II Expansion Project, in Prince Rupert Harbour, British Columbia.

To receive funding, successful applicants must participate in the comprehensive study process. This funding is intended for activities that will follow the public consultation currently underway on the scope of the project.

A Participant Funding Review Committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, will consider all applications and recommend allocation of funds. Funding applications received by the Agency by June 29, 2009 will be considered.

Information on the Program is available on the Agency Website. Information on the proposed project is also available on the Website, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 08-03-37956.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority is proposing to expand its existing Fairview Container Terminal in Prince Rupert Harbour. This will include extending the existing wharf structure and expanding the on-shore terminal. As part of the project, the Canadian National Railway Company is proposing improvements to the associated rail infrastructure.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed project and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
