 Upper Nicola Band Quilchena Firehall Project– Public Comments Invited

 

September 11, 2026 – Environment and Climate Change Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Environment and Climate Change Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.

The Proposed Project

The Upper Nicola Band is proposing to build a firehall in Quilchena, approximately 25 km northeast of Merritt, BC, on the Nicola Lake IR No.1. The Quilchena firehall has been identified as a critical community infrastructure project for the health and safety of the community. The project is estimated to have a footprint of 0.13 ha and the constuction is expected to take a year to complete. 

 

The proposed project will include the following major infrastructure:

  • Firehall building
  • Parking lot and associated access roads
  • Pedestrian gravel pathway
  • Septic tank and associated sanitary lines
  • Onsite surface water drainage

The proponent has applied to Environment and Climate Change Canada for a Species at Risk Act permit under section 73(3).
