Sumas Multiplex

August 21, 2026 – Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada must determine whether the proposed Sumas Multiplex for the Sumas First Nation is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments will be considered public. The Proposed Project

This project will build a new, culturally relevant, multi-purpose community and recreation facility (approx. 18,740 sq.ft [~1741 m²]) for the Sumas First Nation community, serving on-reserve residents and open to the general public. The facility will include a community hall/gymnasium, boardroom, hydrotherapy room, large kitchen, fitness centre, and pedestrian bridge over the neighbouring creek.

Based on the location (a former Brick plant land = ~16, 918 m²), a new design concept is being developed to accommodate the building infrastructure. The project location is within the boundaries of the Upper Sumas No 6 Reserve lands.
