Women Pro-Forests: Climate Change Adaptation in the Moyen-Bafing National Park

August 4th, 2026 – Global Affairs Canada has determined that the proposed is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors: 

• impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;  

• Indigenous knowledge; community knowledge; 

• comments received from the public; and  

• technically and economically feasible mitigation measures. 

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are:  

• Surface water and groundwater resources were protected through the installation of wastewater management and treatment systems, the collection of rainwater where feasible, and the promotion of efficient water-use practices.

• Soil quality was protected by limiting site clearing to the minimum area required, prioritizing already disturbed sites, and implementing erosion and soil compaction prevention measures.

• Soils and water resources were protected through the secure storage of fuels, oils, and other potentially contaminating substances, as well as through spill prevention and response measures.

• Local biodiversity and wildlife habitats were protected by locating infrastructure outside high ecological value areas and sensitive habitats and by prioritizing previously disturbed sites near existing villages.

• Shea tree stands and forest resources were protected through the promotion of sustainable harvesting practices, beneficiary awareness activities, and the application of sustainable natural resource management principles.

• Wildlife, pollinators, and local biodiversity were protected through the promotion of integrated pest management and by reducing reliance on pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides.

• Air quality and community health were protected by minimizing dust, noise, and other nuisances associated with construction activities and material transportation.

• Climate and air quality considerations were incorporated through the use of solar-powered lighting and pumping systems and through measures aimed at reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

• Biodiversity, soils, and water resources were enhanced through environmental awareness activities, beneficiary training, and the adoption of agroecological best practices.

Global Affairs Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. 

Therefore, UPADI may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
