Notice of intent to make a determination

Kahkewistahaw First Nation Community Landfill Reclamation – Public Comments Invited

July 10, 2026 – Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed Kahkewistahaw First Nation Community Landfill Reclamation project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

The Proposed Project

Kahkewistahaw First Nation is planning to reclaim the community's landfill. Future waste generated in the area will be disposed of at a new solid waste transfer station. The primary objective of the proposed work is to return the site to a state where it can be used for other activities and achieve site closure. Waste materials (solid waste, bulky metallic waste, and finished compost) will be buried and/or removed from the property prior to construction of a cap and cover system, which will be compacted and contoured to minimize infiltration and promote drainage. A clay cover will be overlain by topsoil and reseeded. Access to the site will be restricted upon landfill closure.

Site preparation activities include installation of a fence and locked gate, as well as cleanup of waste debris scattered throughout the site with redistribution into the waste pits, or off-site for disposal. Construction activities include collection of clay from a nearby source and transportation to the site. The waste pits will be covered and the landfill compacted and contoured to promote drainage. Once the cap has been constructed, a layer of topsoil, sourced locally, will be placed over the clay and reseeded using a local grass seed mix.
