Modification and Expansion of Waste Disposal Site in Natuashish, NL
June 19, 2026 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Modification and Expansion of Waste Disposal Site in Natuashish, NL, is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- Impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
- Indigenous knowledge;
- Community knowledge;
- Technically and economically feasible mitigation measures, and
- The project is expected to improve environmental conditions through the modernization and enhanced management of an existing Waste Disposal Site and the development of a controlled, designated Construction and Demolition waste area within a previously disturbed quarry.
Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination include potential impacts to Land and Water, Air and Noise, Flora and Fauna, and Socio-Economic, Cultural, and Heritage resources. These measures are further supported by the development and implementation of an Operations and Maintenance Manual for the Waste Disposal Site and Construction and Demolition Waste site. The Manual establishes procedures for waste management, safe handling practices, environmental protection measures, and ongoing groundwater monitoring.
Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
