Fort Alexander Reserve– January 16,2026 Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Traverse Bay Shoreline Stabilization Project (Site A – North Shoreline) is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures have been taken into account for this determination to address the following valued ecosystem components:

  • Aesthetics
  • Air quality – emissions and dust
  • Weather/Climate/Microclimate- precipitation, temperature, soil erosion and stability
  • Soil – erosion, stability, contamination
  • Surface Water – quality, contamination
  • Groundwater – contamination
  • Vegetation
  • Fish/Fish Habitat – quality, contamination
  • Wildlife and Birds
  • Human Health and Safety – worker health and safety
  • Employment and Income
  • Noise
  • Public Concern
  • Hazardous Waste and Waste
  • Socio-Economic

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.  Environmental effects that are within provincial jurisdiction would be addressed through provincial regulations.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.

A Request for Review was submitted to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. A Letter of Advice was sent to Sagkeeng First Nation identifying mitigation measures during project construction. Fisheries and Oceans Canada will not be providing an authorization for the project.
