Upland removals - Interfor Hammond Mill
Notice of Determination
Maple Ridge, B.C. – September 11, 2025 – The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has determined that the proposed Upland removals – Interfor Hammond Mill located at 20580 Maple Crescent, Maple Ridge is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- Impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples
- Indigenous knowledge
- Technically and economically feasible mitigation measures
Best efforts were made to consult with the Katzie First Nation. The concerns, comments or themes raised were:
- Concerns about impacts to underlying soils
- Request that the Applicant adhere to Katzie First Nation Cultural Safety Guidelines
- Request for Katzie guardians to be on site during all work
- Interest in involvement in future site remediation planning and overarching concern related to any ground disturbance activities that may be required in future
The project was posted to the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry on December 27, 2023, for public comment. No comments were received.
Mitigation measures and permit conditions taken into account in making the determination include:
- Condition No. 18 requires that the Permit Holder adhere to Katzie First Nation Cultural Safety Guidelines
- Condition No. 19 requires that the Permit Holder provide opportunities for First Nation guardians to monitor and be present on the Project site at all times during construction. The Permit Holder will coordinate with Katzie First Nation to schedule a Katzie Guardian at all times during construction.
- This project does not include any ground disturbance and future site works or remediation activities that might be required is being discussed separately
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
