Hanger 5 (B259) and Hanger 8 (B250) Roof Replacements – 5 Wing Goose Bay
August 11, 2025 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. The Proposed Project
The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. DND is proposing to replace two building roofs at 5 Wing Goose Bay that are presently in poor condition.
Project activities at Hanger 5 (B259) will generally include hazardous materials abatement (as required), removal of the existing modified bitumen roofing systems in its entirety to expose structural decks, performing minor structural upgrades in localized areas, installation of new modified bitumen roofing system, removal and reinstallation of existing electrical and mechanical systems where required, installation of new roof drains where required, and replacement of existing roof stairs or ladders where required. The total estimated area of the roof replacement for B259 is 11,340 m2 (~84 m x 135 m).
Project activities at Hanger 8 (B250) will generally include hazardous materials abatement (as required), removal of the existing modified bitumen roofing systems including the structural decks and wooden platforms, performing upgrades on and install new structural members, installation of new modified bitumen roofing systems including decks, removal and reinstallation of existing electrical and mechanical systems where required, installation of new roof drains where required, and replacement of existing roof stairs or ladders where required. The total estimated area of the roof replacement for B250 is 10,200 m2 (~75 m x 136 m)
The proposed roof replacements for both B250 and B259 are currently scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2027.
