Piikani Irrigation Waterline
Notice of Determination
Edmonton – July 29, 2025 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Piikani Irrigation Waterline Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
- Indigenous knowledge;
- community knowledge;
- comments received from the public; and
- technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.
Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination include:
- Wildlife Management Plan as part of the Environmental Construction and Operations Plan (ECO) for the project.
- BMP's such as managing onsite garbage appropriately, minimizing noise (no idling) and visual disturbances (working during daylight hours), speed limits, etc.
- Pre-disturbance nest sweeps and implantation of applicable wildlife setbacks and buffers.
- Constructing outside of the nesting season where possible (April 8th – August 24th)
- Implementation of the Alberta Wildlife Land Use Guidelines
- Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (part of the ECO plan)
- Spill prevention and response measures including for accidental concrete release to aquatic environment.
