Notice of Determination

Edmonton – July 29, 2025 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Piikani Irrigation Waterline Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination include:

  • Wildlife Management Plan as part of the Environmental Construction and Operations Plan (ECO) for the project.
  • BMP's such as managing onsite garbage appropriately, minimizing noise (no idling) and visual disturbances (working during daylight hours), speed limits, etc.
  • Pre-disturbance nest sweeps and implantation of applicable wildlife setbacks and buffers.
  • Constructing outside of the nesting season where possible (April 8th – August 24th)
  • Implementation of the Alberta Wildlife Land Use Guidelines
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (part of the ECO plan)
  • Spill prevention and response measures including for accidental concrete release to aquatic environment.
