uniting TOwards Gender Equality for enjoyment of women's and girls' Total HEalth and Rights
October 2, 2024 – Global Affairs Canada has determined that the proposed project (United Towards Gender Equality for Enjoyment of Women`s and Girls' Total Health and Rights) is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
- Indigenous knowledge;
- community knowledge;
- comments received from the public; and
- technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.
The implementing partner will undertake water infrastructure work in Lopacho, Kenya. The EIA for this work (attached) includes a robust analysis of the potential negative environmental effects, and an exhaustive list of corresponding mitigation measures. Examples of these mitigation measures include the following: measures to minimise disturbance of vegetation; measures to minimise disturbance and destruction of wildlife habitat; measures to minimise solid and liquid waste generation; measures to ensure proper waste management; measures to minimise noise and air pollution, and mitigate dust emissions, during construction and decommissioning; measures to minimise health and safety risks; and measures to mitigate groundwater pollution.
Global Affairs Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Therefore, Global Affairs Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
