Notice of Determination

[Gatineau] – [April 23rd, 2025] Global Affairs Canada has determined that the proposed project "Construction and rehabilitation of water and sanitation infrastructures in schools in Venezuela" is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures considered for this determination are:

  • Review the location of WASH infrastructure to minimize exposure to natural and climatic hazards
  • Install rainwater capture systems as a potential source of water, while reducing pressures on other water resources
  • Periodically monitor and supervise quality of water destined for consumption.
  • Ensure the adequate design and construction of sanitation facilities to reduce contamination risk of groundwater and/or surface water resources
  • Install sediment control barriers to avoid erosion and runoff
  • Permanently monitor groundwater extraction rates to avoid possible contamination by saline intrusion.
  • Adequately manage and discharge wastewater or sewage systems to protect aquatic ecosystems.
  • Support capacity building of local authorities for the maintenance of installed WASH infrastructures
  • Minimize the generation of waste, ensure waste segregation and recycling, and strengthen waste management systems in place
  • Request that companies selected to undertake the physical works submit an environmental management plan whose implementation will be monitored by UNICEF

Global Affairs Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, the Global Affairs Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
