Notice of Commencement of an Impact Assessment

Ottawa – December 18, 2024 – On May 31, 2021, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) commenced an impact assessment pursuant to the Impact Assessment Act (IAA) for the Suncor Base Mine Extension Project (the Project).

On January 28, 2021, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, then Minister of Environment and Climate Change, referred the impact assessment of the Project to an independent review panel.

On December 18, 2024, IAAC posted the Notice of Commencement of an Impact Assessment in accordance with the Notice of Transition. In addition, IAAC issued the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines  and required plans, with necessary modifications, to the proponent to guide the development of the Impact Statement for the Project:

• Public Participation Plan
• Indigenous Engagement and Partnership Plan
• Cooperation Plan
• Permitting Plan

In posting this notice, any step completed before the amended IAA came into force regarding the Project is deemed to have been taken under the amended IAA.
