The Proposed Project
Vancouver Airport Authority is proposing a modernization program to upgrade the North Runway (runway 08L-26R) at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Built in the 1990s, the North Runway requires upgrades to ensure its longevity and resilience. The proposed project work includes an asphalt overlay of the entire runway surface with tie-ins to the adjacent taxiways, runway edge lights and approach lights adjustments to support the overlay, replacement of the drainage system as required, and new electrical conduits and wiring will be installed. Regrading of grass infield areas adjacent to the runway will be required. Temporary facilities will be set up for contractor staging, material storage and access.
Work on the runway will be conducted during existing standard nightly closures and the runway will be returned to service each day. The majority of work is expected to take place in spring and summer 2025, although certain activities will begin earlier.
While all the above proposed work is located on the airfield, temporary construction facilities for contractor staging, material storage and access are proposed to be setup on airport lands north of the airfield near the Shannon Road access point. Construction activity in staging areas may occur during the daytime and the nighttime and is not limited to runway closures.
