Action Against Hunger - Construction of incinerators and latrines for Gender Equity and Nutrition in Tanzania and Uganda (GENTU)
Ottawa, Ontario – July 18, 2024 – Global Affairs Canada has determined that the proposed Gender Equity and Nutrition in Tanzania is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- community knowledge;
- comments received from the public; and
- technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.
Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are:
-
WASH activities will include raising awareness of the responsible water use, to avoid over-consumption of available potable water
-
The design and establishment of constructed wetlands is intended to provide a sustainable method of disposal of grey water, and returning water to groundwater sources.
-
The incinerator chimney will be at least 4m tall, to ensure particles from combustion are disbursed broadly.
-
Latrines will follow national pit latrine design guidelines
-
Boreholes for water sources will follow national Ministry of Water Design Manual guidelines.
Global Affairs Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
Therefore, Global Affairs Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
