Public Comment Period on Intent to Make a Determination
Demolition of Defence Research Establishment Pacific (DREP) Jetty in Dockyard, Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt

October 20, 2023 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project. Work involves the demolition of the DREP Jetty located within the Dockyard of CFB Esquimalt and includes the following:

• removal of the complete jetty and associated timber above and below the waterline,

• removal of all piles above and below the mudline,

• removal of the shed, weather monitoring equipment and other structures on the jetty deck,

• removal of site services and capping at mains,

• removal of concrete footings and shoreline abutment,

• removal of the approach and walkway leading to the jetty

• placement of rip-rap or other materials to return the shoreline to a natural state.
