Notice of Determination

July 22, 2022 – Indigenous Services Canada and Infrastructure Canada have determined that the proposed Water Treatment Plant Upgrades project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • The Water Treatment Plant upgrades will provide potable water and fire protection to all current residents of the Shawanaga First Nation, meeting the community's immediate potable water needs;
  • Mitigation measures and adaptive management will be implemented during construction to ensure the protection of the environment.

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to lesson or avoid potential adverse effects to:

  • Air quality and noise;
  • Vegetation;
  • Wildlife and habitat, including Species at Risk and Migratory Birds; and
    • Note that all Terms and Conditions listed under the proponent's two (2) Species at Risk permits for herptile must be followed. Environment and Climate Change Canada should be consulted if the proponent is to undertake activities that are not permitted under the permits.
  • Surface Water Quality

Based on the consideration of these measures, Indigenous Services Canada and Infrastructure Canada are satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada and Infrastructure Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
